Finished Max and Whiskers Quilt

I know it has again been awhile since I last posted but fortunately it isn't just because I have nothing to share.  My husband recently got some unexpected time off (about two weeks) and I like to spend time with him whenever I can get it. He is a pilot and his schedule can be unpredictable so when he is off I like to be off and when he is flying I like to sew and blog.  But on to the finished Max and Whiskers quilt.  This quilt ended up being a nice lap sized quilt.  I made previous posts about the front and back found here and here. 

I decided a while back that this quilt was destined to be my mother's and thus it would be the perfect gift for mother's day.  She has always encouraged me to quilt and has asked me to make quilts for other people, but has never asked me to make one for her.   As a side note my mother doesn't really make quilts, occasionally a baby quilt but she really shines at making bags and aprons, etc.  (meaning she was clearly in need of a quilt)!

I mentioned in another post that a lot of this fabric was my mother's originally.  She made a couple aprons out of the fabric but gave it to me because she didn't think she was going to use the rest (I think she was just being nice and giving me fabric). 

This quilt has the most detail I have ever put into quilting an actual quilt.  I have a small machine so I am very limited in the amount of fabric I can shove into the throat, but this quilt was just the right size to really have fun with it!

The centers of each block have a free motion design that coordinate with the fabrics around it (mice, balls of yarn, paw prints, balls for dogs, etc).  The outsides of the blocks have lines that run the length of each piece of fabric.  Finally I bound it in the orange "grunge" fabric by Moda that coordinates with the line.  It was a lot of work but I love the result!
