When I originally drew the pattern up on paper I was calling it southwestern something or another, but once I made the quilt the name just didn't fit. Instead I asked my bloggy friends for their suggestions and found that it reminded many people of the ocean. I decided to change the name and started calling it Atlantic Currents - Atlantic for the ocean colors and Currents for the directional geese that remind me of ocean circulation and current patterns.
For a binding I found this pretty Ty Pennington Impressions fabric at my local quilt shop. It is technically a stripe fabric, but doesn't scream stripe when you see it on the binding. I love a good striped binding but I think the subtle look of this fabric works better with the fabrics in the quilt.
I used Kona Kale as my backing fabric. It's not a color I would have normally chosen, but I have to say I am loving it, and it will most likely be making another appearance in one of my quilts! It is a lovely color on the bolt, but I think it is much prettier when used on a quilt. I also made a few extra geese and on point squares and sewed them together for a little interest on the back.
For quilting I decided to echo the shapes in the quilt and stitch 1/2" around the outside of the blocks, using a variegated blue/teal/green star thread. I also did a small amount of stitching in the ditch to really help the flow of the front show through to the back.
I am still working on the pattern but it is on my to-do list! Thanks for reading!

BEE-utiful! Love the subtle effect brought on by those cool colours. The quilting is such a compliment to the design. I had a surprisingly pleasant experience with some Kona colours I would not have normally chosen to work with, too. That Kale is perfect for the backing! Great quilt name choice!

ReplyDeleteHey, this is really neat. Perfect name for it. The colors are my absolute favorites, and they're so teasingly peaceful (can't explain that, but it perfectly fits the feeling this evokes in me) in this quilt. :D
