A Bridesmaid Dress Baby Quilt Part 1

The bridesmaid dress that will become a baby quilt.

A while back I got a phone call from my friend B who asked me if I could make a custom baby quilt for her friend using this bridesmaid dress. My friend B had been a bridesmaid in a wedding and the couple who's wedding she was a part of is having a baby (slightly confusing right?).  So she asked me if the dress could be cut up and made into a baby quilt similar to this quilt by Coffee, Caramel and Cream, which is where her idea came from .

Here's the problematic part.  This quilt was for a baby boy and she wanted the quilt to be the colors from her friend's wedding - royal blue and bright orange.

Under normal circumstances this would have been an easy task but the problem was I had a short time to make this quilt and she wanted the quilt in flannel.  I knew I had to buy from a store and not online because sometimes the colors on a monitor are a little off and the color of the dress for some reason was really hard to match.  Most other blues clashed with it and the color itself was nowhere to be found.  I could not find a fabric suited for a baby royal blue in it to save my life.

Then there was the orange.  Orange was much easier to find than blue but every time I found something with orange on it, it was either a floral which was not suited for a baby boy, or contained some color that would have looked terrible with the blue.

Finally while shopping at my local quilt store I came across a white flannel fabric with multicolored robots on it (and it didn't clash), a solid orange flannel, and a Dr. Seuss flannel with multicolored dots. Finally I found some minky type fabrics in solid yellow and black that went with the other fabrics I had picked up.

I had a start to what I was going to use.  After going to many quilt stores i had a start, but it wasn't enough so I went to ask my mother if she had any ideas.  Fortunately for me she had a stash of flannels from Montana that she had bought awhile back but have just been sitting.  She offered them to me and I snatched them up.
